An experimental investigation of the conditions for the production of oscillations by means of an arc placed (1) in air, (2) in hydrogen, (3) in steam, (4) in compressed air. This paper presents the use of a scanning laser vibrometer and a signal decomposition method to characterize non-linear dynamics of highly flexible structures. A Polytec PI PSV-200 scanning laser vibrometer is used to measure transverse velocities of points on a structure subjected to a harmonic excitation.
